Folk Fest 2026  Music mixed with a dash of Medical Advice

Greensboro, NC  September 17, 2026 – The recent DT Greensboro Folk Festival was a resounding success, offering a vibrant tapestry of music, art, and community that drew thousands to the lush riverside setting. Amidst the main stage's acoustic echoes and the interactive workshops, one unexpected area of engagement stood out: the Harmony Health Collective's manned booth, a visual anchor for wellness and advocacy.

The Moses Cone Health Collective, a nonprofit health advocacy group, designed its presence as a hub of practical support and education. Their visual presence, captured in the image, was intentional and inviting, ensuring festival-goers felt at ease approaching a healthcare-focused space.

"Folk festivals have deep roots in community care and mutual aid," explained Shannon Green, one of the advocates seen at the booth. "Our goal was to bring that spirit into 2026 by addressing real, modern healthcare needs in a setting where people feel connected and open."

Over the three-day event, they distributed over 400 harm reduction kits and engaged in over 1,200 one-on-one health consultations. A particularly moving story emerged on the third afternoon.

An attendee named 'Ben,' 24, from a rural county with limited healthcare access, approached the booth. In the photograph, he is seen listening as Maya explains a resource.

"He told us he hadn’t seen a doctor in three years because of cost and transportation," Maya recalled. "But here, surrounded by a festival, he felt safe enough to ask about basic preventative check-ups, insurance navigation, and mental health support. We were able to give him specific contacts for mobile clinics and state programs that he’d never heard of. His guitar was heavy, but his expression when he left was light. That’s why we’re here: to meet people where they are, physically and emotionally."

More Than Just a Booth

The booth served as a base for mobile teams that provided basic first aid and hydration, and it was also a listening post. The Collective gathered valuable data via their donation box, where attendees left notes about their most pressing healthcare concerns.  By providing free, visible, and judgment-free care, the Harmony Health Collective didn't just advocate for healthcare; they demonstrated what an accessible, community-integrated system can look like

Community Activism At Work:  Haircuts for the Homeless

Beyond the Shears: Local Initiative Restores Dignity to the Unhoused

Jun14, 2026 LOS ANGELES, CA — A simple haircut is often viewed as a routine errand, but for the local unhoused community, it serves as a powerful catalyst for transformation. For the past four years, the Haircuts for the Homeless initiative has been proving just that, offering far more than basic grooming to those navigating life on the streets.

Since 2022, the outreach project has transformed regular street corners and community centers into makeshift salons, providing clean cuts, close shaves, and carefully styled updos to individuals facing housing insecurity. Volunteers operating the booths focus on delivering compassionate, hands-on care in a completely judgment-free environment, taking the time to listen to the people in their chairs.

The impact of the initiative extends well beyond physical hygiene. Organizers note that the dedicated time and attention allows individuals to temporarily shed the invisible weight of street survival. By providing this fundamental, humanizing support, the project ensures that every person leaves the chair not only looking refreshed, but feeling valued, renewed, and deeply reconnected to the community around them.
